It is a general trend in the so called big brands of IT industry, bargaining on salary for brand name. They offer you less salary, but instead try to lure you into the glamour of their brand. There have been instances where they try to offer even less than current CTC (Cost to The Company), especially if your current company doesn’t belong to one of those most sought-after brands. So finally the hapless software engineer is pushed to make a trade-off, brand vs. salary.
But there is something which most of the big brands forget, the attrition rate of employees. Recent trends have shown that the attrition rates are very high, especially in the big ones. Reason, once again IT engineers are in demand, and they are hopping from company to company in search of better perks and job satisfaction. So how to reduce attrition? Simple, pay according to market/industry standards.
A note to the IT community: So if the big brands are squeezing you out by paying groundnuts, you have your chance to payback. Work till you have enough of the tag and then move (ideal if you can make them feel you are wanted) to a startup or a decent company which pays you well. After all, there should be a balance right ;-)
